Creating a hybrid space by understanding the needs of the technical experts, business professionals, and entrepreneurs
We addressed the complex task of creating a hybrid space for the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center by understanding the needs of the technical experts, business professionals, and entrepreneurs who would be collaborating in the development of medical device innovations. The center contains laboratories and administrative offices for academic science and business entities from the medical school at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Worcester.
The site and building are historically significant to the region, representing an earlier era of entrepreneurs from the thriving industrial mills. The new space includes six wet labs, conference and meeting rooms, and open collaboration areas, all within a historic mill building.
Our design takes advantage of the historic mill characteristics, using high ceilings and large windows to provide an open environment. The design intentionally combines the industrial look and feel of the building's original use including its metal columns and capitals, exposed brick walls, and wood decking in the ceiling — with modern office features like a folding glass walls, exposed HVAC infrastructure, and movable desks.
