Expanding the Cancer Center at the University of New Mexico to support research, knowledge, and compassionate care
Founded in 1971, the University of New Mexico (UNM) Cancer Center administers more than 5,000 patients each year. It is the state’s official treatment center and represents an environment where patients and their families confront anxiety, grief, and loss. The UNM desired an uplifting environment for patients and their families, including compassionate care centers to promote their physical, psychological, and emotional well-being.
The expansion accommodates current patient needs and plans for future industry demands. Our team also designed the facility to feature an efficient connection to the existing bio-medical labs. The concept was to create a technologically state-of-the-art facility that would support research, knowledge dissemination, and care provision.
The UNM Cancer Center includes a multidisciplinary clinic, a therapy and treatment center, and a diagnostic screening center. We added an education complex, administration center, and numerous amenities to inspire hope and wellness. Retrofitting 30,000 square feet of existing space with 115,000 square feet of phased new construction, our design features large glass windows to provide stunning views and a natural color palette to instill an inviting, peaceful, and warm atmosphere.
