Walker Mill Middle School - Architecture and Design Services
Rapid enrollment growth had created a severe space shortage across Prince George’s County Public Schools’ middle schools. To address this, they implemented an innovative public-private partnership (P3) model. As part of the P3 team, we developed a two-story and four-story prototype design for six new schools. We gave each school a unique identity through customized interior finishes and design elements, reflecting each school community’s culture and values.
A talented and gifted (TAG) magnet center, Walker Mill Middle School supports advanced learners in a stimulating and collaborative environment. Using the two-story prototype, we embraced a water concept for the overall design theme. This allowed us to develop a well-rounded color palette that integrated school colors while introducing calming tones inspired by nature. Our selections for interior finishes included blue and teal accent walls, wave-inspired flooring patterns, and furniture with fluid shapes, creating a sense of movement and energy throughout the building.
We also incorporated custom graphics on the learning stair. Designed by the school, the graphics express Walker Mill’s spirit and pride. This bold visual element serves as a focal point for collaboration and informal learning, reinforcing the school’s identity within the larger prototype framework.
The two-story building serves over 1,000 students in grades 6–8, with specialized spaces for science, technology, arts, and performance. Outdoor learning areas, athletic fields, and landscaping with native plants extend the educational experience beyond the classroom. The school meets LEED Silver standards, emphasizing sustainability, natural light, and views to landscaped areas.
