Improving a busy corridor in downtown Minneapolis
Washington Avenue, also known as CSAH 152, is one busy street. Each day, it serves more than 22,000 cars, buses, and commercial vehicles traveling to and from downtown Minneapolis—plus hundreds of pedestrians and bicyclists. When the time came for an upgrade, Hennepin County chose our team to make sure the construction was safely and cost-effectively completed according to their plans. They were counting on us to complete the project before the impending X Games and Super Bowl LII at nearby U.S. Bank Stadium.
Our team provided inspection services, utility relocation and subconsultant coordination, project management, and Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) State Aid documentation throughout the project. Each day, we responded to expected challenges, including maintenance of very busy traffic and numerous utility conflicts—and some unexpected ones, like undocumented underground utilities and abandoned building foundations. Throughout the project, we helped Hennepin County coordinate the work with several City of Minneapolis departments and Metro Transit.
As construction progressed, a new Washington Avenue emerged: nearly a half mile with two traffic lanes in each direction, turn lanes, elevated and signalized bike lanes, improved lighting and signal systems, and pedestrian zones. The corridor was also enlivened with sustainable plantings and naturalistic furnishings.
