Increasing flexibility for the region’s transportation system
Past its design life, the only existing crossing from West Virginia to Ohio was the Market Street Bridge. This presented some concerns: the old bridge couldn’t be updated to modern standards, and weight limits prevented it from withstanding the weight of commercial trucks. Most importantly? It was the only river crossing in the metropolitan area—this created a situation where emergency vehicle response time was unacceptable.
For this project, we’re providing quality assurance management services on behalf of the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) for a P3 procurement that includes a new major Ohio River crossing. The project involves a tied-arch that will be constructed with a minimum 820-foot clearance span over the river. The main bridge has a 100-year design life, and we provided coordination, collaboration and confidentiality throughout the process, and helped to guide WVDOH through a fair procurement. We are also responsible for environmental review, coordination, and monitoring. During construction, we will oversee permitting activities and environmental mitigation.
With the new river crossing in place, residents will be able to move east to west with ease, avoid areas plagued by rock slides, and emergency response times will be decreased for the people who need help most.
