Enhancing water management services in Ann Arbor

What’s one absolutely essential thing to every person’s life? In Ann Arbor, Michigan, the demand for water was starting to outstrip what their infrastructure could provide. We used InfoWater modeling software to figure out exactly what their needs were—and would become.

Our modeling included the city’s 9,000 pipe model and a detailed transient analysis. We looked at new design points based on different growth projections, and we investigated future elevated storage.

We prepared a design basis report to replace the existing West High Service pump station with a new facility. The report included an evaluation of alternative pumping configurations and some electrical substation replacement options. Next was a submission to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to secure green reserve grant funding toward construction costs.

Our detailed design of a new pump station incorporated four vertical turbine pumps driven by 200 horsepower variable frequency drives, a new motor control center, 3,000 KVA substation, and architectural features that seamlessly integrate with the existing buildings.

As the project moved into construction, we served as administrators. With a detailed sequence to construction, Ann Arbor’s water service was improved without being interrupted.
