White Stadium Revitalization
Located in Franklin Park, White Stadium has been central to Boston Public Schools’ athletics since 1945. An opportunity arose with Boston’s selection as a home for a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team to finally revitalize this historic venue. The City of Boston engaged us to provide architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture services on this project.
Working closely with the City’s design team, we developed a plan for the reimagined stadium that would also preserve its historic mid-century façade as well as Franklin Park’s heritage trees and pastoral pathways. Inspired by the curves of the original stadium, our new additions are composed of white and warm wood organic elements. At the heart of the plan is The Grove, an event lawn designed for storytelling, tai chi, small performances, seasonal markets, and cultural gatherings—each programmed in collaboration with a neighborhood advisory group.
The stadium features new grandstands with roof canopies accommodating 10,000 spectators, along with a new mixed-use concourse and Grove restaurant offering food and beverage options that open directly onto the park and playing fields. Inside the west grandstand, our design blends the site’s architecture with the brand identity of the women’s soccer team to create an environment that feels unmistakably “of Boston.” Through strategic use of color and lighting, inspired by the glow of city streetlights, the look of the interiors can adapt to suit the moment—whether it’s heightening the excitement of a goal or setting the tone for an intimate off-season event.
By drawing on the park’s neighborhoods, history, energy, and sense of renewal, the City has a stadium that supports public school needs, serves local organizations and neighborhoods, and creates a home for Boston’s first NWSL team—creating meaningful moments and fostering belonging for all.
