Sustainability and resiliency with functionality and high-quality spatial design are features of this facility

We’re serving as the design lead for the progressive design-build team responsible for delivering the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Rail Heavy Repair and Overhaul (HRO) Facility. The goal of the project is to centralize Metrorail car heavy repair and mid‐life overhaul activities at a single facility.

Advancing WMATA’s mission for a more sustainable future, the team is integrating green design features, with a goal for the facility to meet requirements for LEED Platinum certification. Project priorities include water demand reduction, significant daylighting for train repair and office operations, energy use reduction, innovative stormwater management practices, and optimized indoor environmental quality. Sustainable design strategies include energy efficient HVAC systems, lighting design, efficient plumbing fixture selection, optimized space conditioning and zoning, coordination with WMATA on demand response programs, on-site solar photovoltaics, daylit spaces, and access to green space for all employees.

Our design will provide functionality and efficiency for the maintenance aspects and provide a workplace that reflects the needs of the employees that perform the imperative work to keep the rail cars running smoothly and safely.
