Stantec provided designing and building services for family-centered care based on the concept of the “single family room"
As a Brown Medical School teaching hospital, it is imperative that Women & Infants Hospital have the resources to both treat patients and train future medical professionals in the fields of gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, oncology, and other women’s health needs. The hospital knew that they needed to expand to respond to the changing patterns of care in high-risk maternal-fetal medicine and turned to us for our design expertise.
The goal: add 140,000 square feet to the existing hospital primarily for a new NICU and ante-partum beds. Using NICU guiding principles to guide our process, we built one of the largest NICU units in the country without compromising any of the existing operations. The 80-bed unit is divided into four 20-bed “zones” and each baby has a private room to aid in the integration of parents with the infant’s care. A family lounge connects the two floors of the NICU, which enjoys a dedicated lobby and drop-off area designed to improve orientation of the front entrance to Dudley Street.
With strategically placed common areas located at the joint where the new wing bends, family members, guests, patients, and staff can enjoy ample daylight that streams into the building from the transparent two-story link.
