Women’s Hospital - Perinatal Mental Health Unit

Severe mental health issues are one of the leading causes of complications during pregnancy and childbirth. The Baton Rouge area lacked appropriate facilities, forcing those suffering from postpartum depression and pregnancy related PTSD to seek help elsewhere in the state. Woman’s Hospital wanted to provide support and treatment closer to home. They reached out to our team to help.

Our focus for the design for the new unit was to give patients a place where they can heal for both mental and physical health conditions. The new unit houses up to 10 patients in private rooms. The rooms are equipped with postpartum supplies, rocking chairs and special components to help patients get adequate sleep. We designed rooms to prevent self-harm with features such as weighted furniture and double-hinged doors.

In addition to private rooms and specialized care, the new unit also includes a large activity room for group therapies, yoga, spiritual care, snacks, and more. An enclosed terrace also provides space for activity-based therapies and allows patients to have access to fresh air and sunshine.

Today, the Perinatal Mental Health Unit provides those in the Baton Rouge community with necessary care closer to home.
