Worcester Polytechnic Institute Stratton Hall Renovation

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) wanted to transform Stratton Hall, built in 1894, into a modern home for the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the heart of their campus. They reached out to our team to help.

We began the comprehensive renovation process with a detailed feasibility study that included programming, conceptual design, and cost analyses to define project goals in collaboration with WPI’s leadership and faculty. Key priorities included meeting current code and accessibility requirements, improving energy efficiency, and upgrading the building’s thermal envelope—all while mitigating any reduction in faculty office or classroom space.

As part of the project, we designed a new five-story, 4,000-square-foot (372-square-metre) addition, known as “The Link.” It features an egress stair, elevator, and collaboration spaces that connect Stratton Hall to an adjacent historic building—bringing both academic spaces up to current accessibility standards.

Our team also restored the original façade, installed energy-efficient windows, and introduced discreet rooftop mechanical systems. The thoughtfully scaled addition preserves key sightlines while integrating seamlessly with the original architecture. We balanced contemporary design elements with traditional materials—such as standing-seam copper panels—that complement the WPI’s historic character, making the new structure feel like a natural extension of the original architecture.

Through strategic spatial planning and innovative design, the updated Stratton Hall will continue to meet WPI’s evolving academic and social needs for years to come.
