Such deadly floods are mitigated by alerting the public with rapid, real-time, and map-based flood warnings produced by machine learning (ML) coupled to a weather forecast. In this case, we ran our Insight ML model based on the recorded rainfall, which reasonably predicted the extent of flooding—it takes minutes to convert a weather forecast into flood mapping.
