Iqaluit Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade/Expansion

In 2011, the City of Iqaluit set out to upgrade their existing water treatment plant. They needed to keep up with the city’s expected growth for the next 20 years, and equipment need to be upgraded to conform to current treatment standards. They brought in the Nunami Stantec team in to help.

For this project, we provided the planning, detailed design and construction administration. Due to the remote location and extremely harsh climate of this project, we were faced with some unique challenges. To help meet these challenges, the existing facility footprint was utilized to its maximum to assist in reducing new building costs, equipment that is smaller in footprint and robust was selected and the building envelope and support systems are engineering to meet the harsh environment.

The result? Incorporating existing plant components into the new design, we created a robust system that can withstand Iqaluit’s extreme weather while providing a level of treatment that meets federal guidelines for the community for years to come.
