Branch I Aqueduct Underdrain Outfall Repairs

The City of Winnipeg relies on the Branch I Aqueduct for about 40 percent of their drinking water. Built between 1914 and 1919, the aqueduct is protected by an underdrain system that lowers the groundwater around the pipe and protects it from sulfate-related deterioration. The City partnered with our team to repair three river outfalls, eliminate two connections to the combined sewer system, and design targeted repairs within the project area.

Since it’s a critical part of the City’s regional water supply system, all work on the aqueduct needed to be completed while it remained in service. To reduce excavations and construction risk when working around this century-old pipe, we incorporated trenchless methods like cured‑in‑place pipe (CIPP) lining, CIPP spot repairs, pipe jacking, and directional drilling. The CIPP spot repairs made work beneath active rail lines possible while maintaining the underdrain’s function as a drainage system. Using trenchless technology allowed us to stabilize and maintain the underdrain for the foreseeable future.

The project restored the underdrain’s ability to protect the Branch I Aqueduct, extending the life of this critical and historic asset. The effort reduced long‑term operational risk, improved system resiliency, and helped the City avoid the high cost and disruption of replacing the aqueduct, safeguarding Winnipeg’s water supply for years to come.
