The City of Vallejo has selected Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, to prepare an environmental impact report (EIR) as part of a redevelopment effort for Mare Island.

Formerly the site of the first US Naval base on the West Coast, Mare Island sits nearly 25 miles from San Francisco. It’s also the cornerstone of a proposed redevelopment project for the City of Vallejo, which is seeking to revitalize its Mare Island, waterfront, and downtown areas to become highly sought-after locations for residents, businesses, and industry.

The first step to that revival is the Mare Island Specific Plan EIR, which will analyze the comprehensive environmental effects related to potential development. It will also look closely at the environmental impacts of planning, construction, and operation as proposed in the plan.

“There’s so much energy around the redevelopment of Mare Island, and this will be a catalyst for further efforts to rejuvenate the City of Vallejo and help it become a thriving part of the San Francisco Bay Area,” said Trevor Macenski, senior principal, community development at Stantec. “Completion of this EIR will be a major first step for the City of Vallejo to gain momentum for its transformation.”

The EIR will comply with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requirements. A separate federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) evaluation will also be required.

The future of Mare Island
An updated Specific Plan is being prepared for Mare Island that envisions a future for the area including vibrant, walkable neighborhoods; thousands of new jobs; resilient buildings and infrastructure; and a space where diverse, multigenerational communities can thrive.

Stantec’s EIR will take into consideration public comment and community feedback on several components including housing, open and public spaces, climate factors, and more.

Stantec has worked closely with the City of Vallejo for several years on projects including residential and mixed-use projects, environmental and contract planning services, and waterfront development. Stantec’s community development team also has deep experience working on urban planning and design, land use planning, and CEQA documents—including the most recent changes to CEQA.
