Los Angeles celebrates opening of the Metro D Line Extension

May 11, 2026

Long-anticipated upgrade will add travel options and connect city landmarks along Wilshire Boulevard

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) and project partners are celebrating the opening of the first section of the Metro D (Purple) Line Extension in Los Angeles, a long-anticipated update to the city’s metro system. The 3.9-mile extension is the first of three sections, connecting cultural and urban landmarks from historic Mid-Wilshire, Koreatown, and Downtown Los Angeles. The extension includes three new stations and will offer residents and visitors expanded options when traveling and commuting.

Stantec has served as LA Metro’s construction manager on the project for more than a decade, overseeing mainline and utility contracts, construction relations, and providing quality and safety oversight. The award-winning project is one of the largest transit expansions in the US.

“This is a major milestone for Los Angeles, and for our team,” said Brian Norris, senior vice president of Program and Construction Management at Stantec. “It’s a privilege to work alongside LA Metro and our partners to deliver this world-class transportation option for the community.”

In addition to drastically improving regional mobility, the extension is a critical infrastructure project designed to support the city's transit needs for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
