Christchurch Town Hall (CTH) was severely damaged following the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Internationally recognised for the acoustics in its auditorium, the complex is listed as a grade one heritage building under the Christchurch City Plan.
In 2013, the decision was made to repair, seismically strengthen, and refurbish the CTH building to 100% of New Building Standard. Prior to the earthquakes, we were contracted as the electrical engineering consultant for a partial refurbishment. When the new design work started, we were retained to provide the electrical building services.
The electrical design was complicated, and the cable routes had to be carefully designed to be concealed within the new and existing structures to minimise the impact on the heritage-listed building. A significant amount of new cable was installed in the building, which cannot be seen. Due to the nature and complexity of the work, a much higher level of contract observation was also required throughout the construction phase.
The post-earthquake repair and strengthening project was a major collaboration between the architects, contract engineers and consultants, the Christchurch City Council, and the contractor. It was the first major refurbishment since its’ original construction in 1972, and all modernisation of key spaces was achieved, without affecting the heritage fabric of the building. The venue is now a fully restored civic building, and the auditorium is enjoyed by local audiences and visitors to Christchurch.
