Let’s Get Wellington Moving - Strategic Highway Business Case

Over the next 30 years, Wellington’s population is expected to grow by up to 80,000 people. To support the growing population, the City needs to change now—to fix existing transport problems and plan for the future. A joint initiative between Wellington City Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council, and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency—Let’s Get Wellington Moving—is leading this programme.

Our job? In partnership with Aurecon and WSP, we delivered an indicative business case for the strategic highway elements of the initiative. This business case—which combines land use development—helped determine how to get additional people through Mount Victoria to improve connections between the central city and eastern suburbs, including the airport. It also included changes that needed to be made to the transport network around the iconic Basin Reserve to support mass rapid transit. Additionally, we prepared an overall programme report which was used to justify a suite of wider infrastructure improvements to client partners and government.

Once these projects, and the greater goals of Let’s Get Wellington Moving, are complete, Wellingtonians will benefit from a leading transport system that’s truly integrated into the city’s fabric. One that not only delivers transport benefits, but also amenity benefits for people living, working, and playing in the supported communities.
