Enhancing marine and port infrastructure to support aquaculture growth in the Tasman region

Port Tarakohe Redevelopment

Collaborating with Tasman District Council (TDC) on the Port Tarakohe project provided an opportunity to deliver coastal infrastructure upgrades that support aquaculture growth and regional development in Golden Bay. The project brings together national expertise to deliver resilient, future-focused marine and port infrastructure outcomes.

Driven by aquaculture expansion, TDC sought to upgrade the former Golden Bay Cement Works port to enable more efficient commercial operations. Our team provided technical inputs to a business case for a central government funding application, including options for dredging and harbour development, berth relocation, and improved port capacity. Following funding constraints, the project was refined to deliver a cost-effective port and wharf upgrade aligned with available budgets.

The works include wharf and marine structure upgrades, replacement of the fender system, extension of the breakwater to improve shelter, new floating berths, and a ramp to support barge operations. These improvements enhance marine infrastructure capacity, safety, and operational efficiency.

We led resource consent approvals for coastal works, including dredging and development within the coastal marine area, creating compliance with regulatory requirements. A collaborative early contractor involvement (ECI) procurement approach enabled value engineering and cost optimisation.

Construction is now complete and our team provided construction monitoring and engineer-to-contract services to support quality delivery. The project strengthens coastal resilience, enables aquaculture growth, and delivers long-term regional economic development infrastructure outcomes.
