Rutherford Regional Science and Innovation Centre - Engineering Design

With 20,000 square metres of floor space, the Rutherford Regional Science and Innovation Centre (RRSIC) combines multiple science teaching areas and research laboratories. Our team provided mechanical, hydraulic, ancillary electrical, vertical transportation, and environmentally sustainable design services.

Working with Umow Lai as a sub-consultant, we helped deliver this complex laboratory project, which demanded flexibility of spaces to accommodate multiple users. Incorporating flat-floor technology-enabled teaching spaces, the layout clusters around large social meeting areas, specifically designed to showcase science and the innovative work being carried out behind glass fronted laboratories. Formal teaching zones are combined with informal collaboration zones and specialist laboratory spaces including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMRs), X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy.

Our team used building information modelling (BIM) to coordinate the services model, which helped us identify issues early and support project completion within budget, especially when there were contractor delays.

Today, RRSIC provides a stimulating space where students and employees can learn and expand their knowledge.
