The Piano – Centre for Music and the Arts
With dedicated spaces for functions, performances, artist amenities and corporate offices, The Piano is an inspiring venue for the performing arts.
Appointed as the electrical, mechanical and hydraulic contractors, delivering a facility of this scale and ambition required careful coordination and adaptability. There were challenges to overcome, including coordination between services, which, without the use of a 3D modelling tool, resulted in construction period timeline alterations.
Despite the challenges, our project team worked collaboratively with all contractors and other trades to keep the project moving forward and mitigate design change impacts. Mechanical design changes were made to meet the budget, reinforcing the need to maintain sufficient system adaptability, especially in multi‑use spaces where occupancy and heat loads can fluctuate air conditioning needs, particularly when hosting multiple events simultaneously.
Digital infrastructure and early designs for the wi-fi system were also altered when insufficient wireless coverage was identified, due to the thickness of the concrete walls. This was solved by adopting Wi-Fi heat‑mapping software, allowing the system to provide reliable connectivity, even when large audiences were online at once.
The collective commitment to quality delivered an elegant space that combines technical complexity with artistic flair and serves the community as a cultural centre. It also features a two-storey music school to nurture and train future performers.
