The Remarkables Ski Area - Ongoing Engineering Services

Since 2013, we’ve worked alongside NZSki to support their ongoing development of The Remarkables Ski Area, an alpine resort located 45 minutes from Queenstown. Working closely with NZSki gives us valuable insight into the realities of running a ski area, where guest experience, safety, and environmental resilience must be carefully balanced. We help NZSki bring innovation to many of their ski field projects through robust engineering solutions which often incorporate subtle design refinements.

We’ve delivered a wide range of civil, structural, and geotechnical services tailored to the unique challenges of an alpine environment. Our work has included the design and implementation of critical infrastructure such as wastewater treatment systems, a variety of stabilisation and resilience improvements on access and on-field roads, chair lift foundations, and structural works for on-field and operational buildings. We’ve also carried out extensive natural hazard assessments and provided strategic advice to help NZSki manage natural hazard risks in a high alpine setting.

Recently, we collaborated with NZSki on the Shadow Basin Chairlift Chair Stacking Building. By simplifying connection details and reducing the variety of structural elements, we enabled rapid on-site assembly, reducing both cost and exposure to weather-related delays. The design was a finalist in the 2024 Excellence in Steel Awards, praised as “a practical, easy-to-build and accurately designed structure,” which allowed the steel frame to be erected in under eight days.
