US Route 1 - Section 6V Bridge Replacement and Interchange Improvements
What do a town and a township, two universities, and a pharmaceutical R&D facility have in common? The Route 1 Interchange in Middlesex County, New Jersey. What did they want? Roadway accessibility, attractiveness, and safety for pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists.
Partnered with the New Jersey Department of Transportation, we went to those stakeholders and got their input. We upgraded the Interchange aesthetics with special design treatments—a historic farm look for Rutgers’s Cook Campus and a modern, lushly landscaped look for Bristol-Myers Squibb. We reconfigured roadways (including adding two-way traffic under the bridge) and snuck in new sidewalks and shoulders.
One happy surprise was discovering that the nearby railroad was inactive. This gave us the opportunity to create a shorter, single-span bridge with a lower profile. After some negotiations, the railway was abandoned, and the New Jersey DOT saved a significant amount of money.
