As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (USDE’s) national campaign to enhance their research facilities, they embarked on a multiphased modernization plan for Brookhaven National Laboratory, upgrading more than 4 million square feet (371,162 square metres) of building infrastructure. We played a key role in this effort, updating critical research space in two 1960s-era facilities—Building 510 (Physics) and Building 555 (Chemistry)—to support rapidly evolving technologies and research protocols.
The project encompassed 100,000 square feet (9,290 square metres) of upgrades, enhancing life safety plans, infrastructure, and laboratory ventilation. By integrating adaptable solutions, our design anticipates and accommodates future laboratory renovations and fit-outs and significantly reduces the lab’s energy consumption.
Glass walls replace dark, isolated labs with open, adaptable spaces, enhancing the occupant experience and fostering collaboration. In Building 510, new research environments include two Class 10,000 clean rooms designed for precision experiments. Upgrades to the Physics Seminar Wing feature an auditorium and flexible event space for knowledge-sharing.
Building 555’s modernization improves infrastructure quality, transforming outdated labs into flexible facilities for chemical and material sciences research. With enhanced efficiency, safety, and adaptability, these upgrades meet current research needs and position Brookhaven for future scientific advancements.
Through strategic modernization, this project helped transform Brookhaven’s research spaces into high-performance environments, supporting the USDE’s mission to drive scientific progress for years to come.
