India Hutchinson wins second place at British Dam Society Young Professionals’ Competition

Graduate civil engineer India has reached the final of this competition recognizing British Dam Society members under 35 years of age

A prestigious annual event, the British Dam Society’s (BDS) young professionals’ competition is open to members under 35 years old. We are proud to congratulate India, a graduate civil engineer at Stantec, on reaching the finals and going on to win second place overall.
Supported by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the BDS competition is open to young engineers and asks entrants to submit a 2,500-word paper on dam engineering. Topics included reservoir research, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and supervision and examples of their roles and experience.

Currently, India is working within the Esh-Stantec joint venture on the Northumbrian Water project at Grassholme Reservoir. For her submission, India drew on her knowledge of the works at Grassholme Reservoir, focusing on her involvement with the northern embankment stabilisation works project. India’s paper was one of the five selected from all the submissions to go through to the final stage.
The five finalists joined a virtual event on Monday 10th January. Following presentations of their papers, questions from the judges and the online audience, the judge's scores were announced, with India named as winner of the second-place prize.

On receiving her award, India said: “I’m very proud to be part of such rewarding projects, supported by the incredible teams that I work with. I was introduced to the world of dams and reservoirs just a year and a half ago and I’m thoroughly enjoying the challenge. I’m delighted to have been successful in the 2021 BDS Young Professionals’ Competition, recognising the professional progress I have made in this field, while also showcasing the great work that is going on at Grassholme Reservoir.”
