My Stantec Story: Increasing brand awareness in the UK with Kellie Young

February 28, 2022

Kellie, marketing director UK&I, shares the breadth of opportunities Stantec pursues—and how she gets to talk about them

In the My Stantec Story series, our designers, engineers, marketers, project managers, and leaders come together to share how their career journeys at Stantec have shaped their lives and moved them closer to their goals.

Tell us about your role…

I lead the UK&I Marketing and External Communications team developing marketing initiatives and campaigns in support of our business growth strategy. In addition to supporting our teams in the UK, I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in global initiatives such as the launch of Stantec.io and our climate change and social value programme.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

We have some amazing technical specialists within Stantec and being able to work with them to share their insights is one of the most enjoyable parts of my role. Whether we’re promoting decarbonisation of transport, enhancing and protecting biodiversity, or supporting a new development, it all leads back to delivering social value and demonstrating the positive impact of this to our communities—which makes me proud to be a part of Stantec.

Of our brand values which is most important to you?

Of all our brand values “we do what is right” is what makes a difference. Stantec really cares about the communities it’s creating—because they are our communities too.

But it doesn’t just apply to our project work and how we support our clients, it relates to how we treat our own people too. As someone who joined in March 2020 at the very start of the pandemic, I’ve been impressed by how the business responded to those challenges to do what was right by our people and support them during this time.

How would you describe the culture at Stantec?

Equality, diversity, and inclusion are at the heart of our culture, where people are passionate about supporting each other to achieve. I’m a member of our employee resource group for neurodiversity which aims to raise awareness of what neurodiversity is, celebrate strengths, and challenge stigma to help create a workplace that is inclusive and accessible to all.

It’s great to work with an inspiring mix of marketing professionals both in the UK and globally.

What are your passions outside of work?

Community engagement is really important to me, and over the years I’ve held a number of voluntary roles from being a Prince’s Trust mentor for children in care to running an events programme for a small charity. At the moment I’m a governor at my son’s school, and when my four-year term is up, I’ll be looking for a new opportunity. Being a working mum keeps me busy, but during lockdown I started open water swimming and—having taken photography training many years prior—became reacquainted with my camera!

Why should someone looking for a career in marketing join the Stantec team?

We’ve got a great team of marketers in the UK with different backgrounds, personalities, specialties, and strengths that they bring to the team. We also benefit from a wider global network of marketing professionals that we share best practice and ideas with. There’s a real focus on innovation and access to new technologies and software to bring our storytelling to life. In fact, we recently created a video game to showcase a transport project for a major conference. It’s great to have the tools to develop interactive content like this, and the client was so impressed they asked us for a copy for their office reception—it’s great to see the team’s efforts recognised!

At Stantec, we do what is right and we put people first, and for Kellie that means supporting each other and the clients and communities we serve. If you want to find a role at Stantec that fits your needs and aspirations, visit Stantec.jobs to look at our available positions.
