How do we advance Nature-based Solutions while addressing current confusion? Stantec’s Brendan Player shares his views with Environment Analyst.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are an important part of the net-zero puzzle. In an interview with Environment Analyst, Environment Planner Brendan Player advocates for greater transparency and a culture of accountability in the industry to help guide the market and address current doubts. Player points to Stantec project Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge as a successful example of NbS that was driven by data and the local community.

Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works is a rural plant that recycles wastewater generated from a small village in the UK. It is another example of a successful NbS solution, designed by Stantec with BarhaleEnpure JV for Yorkshire Water.

To meet new water quality requirements, additional infrastructure was needed to reduce nutrient load to the environment. This involved using more than 24,000 plants to create an innovative, low-carbon solution. The project has won a total of eight industry awards due to the level of benefits it provides for the community.
