We are lead designers on the Agratas battery manufacturing facility in Somerset, UK.
Not only is this a complex facility, it is the largest of its kind in the UK and central to the government’s Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan.
We were faced with an interesting challenge: how to design this large and complex factory around a production process that was still being developed.
Our global integrated design team worked closely with Agratas to develop an approach that overcame this. We leveraged our experience in the sector to make informed assumptions so that we could progress quickly. We came up with a design that delivered efficiency while allowing us to evolve the design as the production process was defined.
Our long history with the Gravity site also involves the adoption of a Local Development Order, planning the energy infrastructure, environmental impact assessments, and site drainage.
The facility is expected to bring £700 million a year to the local economy and support 4,000 jobs when operational. It demonstrates the important role the UK can play in meeting global demand for batteries for electric vehicles, powering the future of sustainable mobility.
