Smart water networks can identify and prevent water leaks and network incidents says Damian Crawford in this Institute of Water Magazine article

An ageing water infrastructure and the associated repair and replacement costs that go with that are top of the agenda for water utilities. As water mains and pipes become more susceptible to the wear and tear over time, increasingly this is where we suffer our greatest loss…water.

In this Institute of Water Magazine article, Damian Crawford, head of smart network and leakage at Stantec delves into the UK’s largest and most advanced smart network – Yorkshire Water’s Hadfield smart network pilot.

Utilising state-of-the-art digital twin technologies, digital water meters, sensors, advanced analytics and telecommunications channels, the pilot aims to revolutionise the way Yorkshire Water manages leaks and interruptions to supply in the future and therefore reduce the amount of water taken from the environment.

The Hadfield smart water network pilot was awarded the Utility Week’s Innovation Award 2020, with judges praising ‘the scope and ambition’ of the winning entry, “which showed a pioneering application of digital twin technology at impressive scale.”
