Stantec helps secure development consent for Helios renewable energy scheme

December 03, 2025

A major solar energy project near Selby is one step closer to delivery, having gained development consent

The Helios Renewable Energy Project DCO application has been granted development consent by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The solar scheme will be one of the largest in the UK, and will provide more than 50MW of low carbon energy into the grid.

Stantec’s Community Development teams have been deeply involved in this major solar scheme near Selby since its beginning. The firm has been supporting Enso Energy with a range of planning and environmental services, from the project’s inception to the submission and examination of the application.

Granted on 3rd December 2025, this consent allows for the installation of ground-mounted solar arrays and energy storage infrastructure, supporting the generation of low carbon power.

“We’re proud to have led the planning and EIA activity on this innovative and complex renewables scheme, which is another positive step towards a low-carbon grid,” said Abigail Bartlett, Stantec’s major infrastructure and environmental planner.

Once complete, the development will include a battery energy storage scheme, connecting to the grid via underground cable at a nearby power station.

The scheme serves as an important project in delivering the UK government’s Clean Power 2030 targets and supporting the UK’s transition to low-carbon power.
