Stantec wins prestigious Utility Week award

King’s Scholars Pond sewer rehabilitation project wins Team of the Year

LONDON; UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN

The King’s Scholars Pond (KSP) sewer rehabilitation project carried out on behalf of our client Thames Water has won Team of the Year at the Utility Week Awards 2019.

The Utility Week Awards are the gold standard of achievement for UK utilities. The highly coveted event motivates, celebrates and rewards performance and innovation across the entire industry.

The delivery team comprising Thames Water, designer Stantec and construction partner SMB worked together to develop and apply innovative engineering techniques to upgrade a brick-built Bazalgette Victorian sewer above Baker Street tube station, while keeping London flowing, in more ways than one.

Collaborative stakeholder engagement has been a key element in the successful delivery of the project by this team. Stantec’s design team, worked in close collaboration with Thames Water, the SMB delivery team, London Underground and Transport for London to develop an innovative solution to extend the asset life of the underground pipe bridge by 120 years, whilst minimising any  disruption to Thames Water’s major stakeholder – the people of London.

The team’s solution involved the installation of a modular stainless-steel bridge and integral liner constructed off site, dismantled and then assembled inside the sewer, after being lowered underground one piece at a time through a narrow manhole.

Neal Edwards, Lead Designer and Technical Director at Stantec said; “The whole team exhibited exceptional endeavor, attitude and professionalism throughout the whole project lifecycle. The team’s overall drive to succeed and deliver a successful project ensured a truly collaborative approach all the way from concept development through to construction and commissioning. Awards don’t come much bigger than the Utility Week Awards and they are an endorsement by your peers and the industry as a whole that what you’ve done is exceptional.”

The KSP Project is a testament to exceptional project execution, client care and stakeholder engagement but is also a demonstrable example of leveraging the skills and resources of a diverse team to innovate when faced with extraordinary constraints.
