Yorkshire Water and Stantec Win BCIA Digital Initiative of the Year 2020

British Construction Industry Awards Winners

11/11/2020 WARRINGTON; UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN

Yorkshire Water and Stantec’s unique automated approach to identifying Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) risks has won the Digital Initiative of the Year at the 2020 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA).

The BCI Awards seek to recognise and reward excellence in project delivery and crucially, delivering outcomes for society.

Yorkshire Water and Stantec have developed an innovative and industry leading approach to determining the Highly Flammable Liquids and septicity risk of their catchment assets across Yorkshire Water’s region.

Stantec’s DSEAR digital platform uses a suite of datasets and algorithms to collate the required information at a catchment level and feeds the risk directly into individual asset assessment models. The benefit of taking an end to end approach is that once the possibility of upstream risk has been removed, the number of assets requiring assessments is significantly reduced. This improvement in assessment accuracy and the declassification of assets has provided significant health and safety improvements.

This approach is a testament to Yorkshire Water’s innovative, industry leading DSEAR assessment methodologies and Stantec’s exceptional assessment tool and project execution to deliver 7,000+ catchment assessments across 22,400 miles of sewer, serving a population of 5.5 million within 18 months.

Paul Hodgson, Project technical lead at Stantec said, “This project is a great example of how innovative thinking and close collaboration enabled us to identify and develop a highly efficient and industry leading digital solution. We are very proud of this award.”
