Thames Water and Stantec celebrate British Construction Industry Awards 2021 shortlisting

07/27/2021 UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN

Thames Water’s Childrey Warren Abstraction Closure Scheme, designed by Stantec and delivered by SMB, has been shortlisted for the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA) – Utility Project of the Year 2021.

The BCIA Awards seek to recognise and reward excellence in project delivery and crucially, delivering outcomes for society.

The Childrey Warren Abstraction Closure Scheme was delivered to safeguard Letcombe Brook, recognised by the Environment Agency as a chalk stream of national significance. This project has provided a new 6km pipeline along with pumping and booster stations and reservoir upgrade, enabling water to be transferred from Lark Hill Reservoir to Childrey Warren Water Treatment Works (WTW), and abstraction of water from a borehole into the chalk stream to be ceased. The project benefits the environment by reducing the need to take water from Letcombe Brook, resulting in, a globally rare, highly important habitat protected for future generations.

Environmental specialists including archaeologists and ecologists worked with the Environment Agency, Local Authority and other stakeholders to assess any potential environmental impacts and design appropriate mitigation measures for the pipeline route.

The wider scheme delivered additional benefits and outcomes for the people within the regional communities, including securing a resilience to water supply in Wantage and Hackpen and meeting future demand for an area planned for significant development over the next 25 years.

Jacquie Christodoulides, Stantec’s Operational Director said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the nationally significant Childrey Warren Abstraction Closure Scheme has been shortlisted for the BCIA Utility Project of the Year! This was a highly complex project which required input from many disciplines. A collaborative team effort as always and a real demonstration of how we worked with the Environment Agency, Local Authority and other stakeholders to deliver the best value, low carbon, long term solution for all stakeholders and the people within the community it serves.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony which will take place on October 13th, 2021 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
