Yorkshire Water’s Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) has been shortlisted in the Net Zero category at the Utility Week Awards 2022. This award recognises the outstanding contributions of the sector in tackling climate change and meeting the UK’s net zero ambitions.
Clifton WwTW ICW is the first integrated constructed wetland in the UK, designed to treat all flows in a more natural, sustainable manner when compared to traditional methods.
Designed by Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, in partnership with Barhale Doosan JV, Clifton WwTW ICW is a rural treatment plant in a small village in South Yorkshire which recycles wastewater generated from the local area.
To meet new water quality requirements, additional infrastructure was needed to reduce nutrient load to the environment. The project team created an innovative, low carbon, nature-based solution using more than 24,000 plants which has delivered the first ever Biodiversity Net Gain positive nutrient reduction WwTW in the UK. This has supported Yorkshire Water’s drive toward its Net Zero goals with an operational carbon saving of 79%, and an embodied carbon saving of 50%.
The ground-breaking scheme has already won and been shortlisted for several industry awards. Most recently, the project picked up both the Innovation Award and the Overall Winner Award at the CIRIA BIG Biodiversity Challenge Awards and took home the gong for Environment & Sustainability Initiative of the Year category at the British Construction Industry Awards.
The winners at the 2022 Utility Week Awards will be announced on 6 December 2022. The full list of finalists and more information can be found at Utility Week Awards.
