Stantec and Esh-Stantec honoured by winning four categories at Northumbrian Water Group’s GEM Awards

Stantec and Esh recognised by Northumbrian Water Group for ‘going the extra mile’

10/17/2023 NEWCASTLE, UK TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, and joint venture, Esh-Stantec, have won four accolades at Northumbrian Water Group’s (NWG) ‘Going the Extra Mile’ (GEM) Awards.

NWG created the GEM Awards to recognise the important roles its supply partners play in helping the water company achieve its vision, celebrating those ‘going the extra mile’.

Stantec picked up the One Team Award due to its collaborative approach working with Mott MacDonald and The Rivers Trust within the PR24 Catchment Team and the North East Catchments Hub.

Esh-Stantec, which was formed in 2015 to design and deliver capital schemes for Northumbrian Water, won in three further categories. The joint venture’s work on the Johnson Street overflow in Newcastle picked up the Project/Programme of the Year Award. This innovative scheme is helping protect the River Tyne against aesthetic pollution, as well as improving the overall water quality.

The joint venture also won the Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Award for its efforts to remove the stigma of mental health through the rollout of striking green, transparent hard hats across its schemes that are designed to 'get people talking!' The hat's branding includes the message: "It's what's inside the hard hat that matters." It also has a QR code that, when scanned, takes users directly to The Lighthouse Club's #MakeItVisible support page.

Esh-Stantec was also recognised with the Legacy Award for the delivery of its trailblazing ‘Construction in the Curriculum’ (CITC) programme. The programme places construction and the built environment at the forefront of Year 9 student's minds by linking the subjects taught in school to those needed to access a variety of roles in the sector. During the last academic year, CITC was delivered to over 500 students in the NWG operating area, all of which were near an Esh-Stantec scheme. With legacy being a key driver for Esh-Stantec, the venture proudly received the runner up spot in this category with its ‘Workforce of the Future’ campaign. This aims to encourage apprentices and graduates to join the industry.

“We’re so proud to have been recognised for our efforts that not only support Northumbrian Water Group, but also the wider construction industry, the environment, and our communities,” says Maire Lenihan, operations director, Stantec. “We’re looking forward to building on our success at the GEM Awards with more creative and inspiring work that will help futureproof our water sector over the next period.”

“The recognition for going the extra mile is a testament to our incredible team who work tirelessly to deliver outstanding projects across the water network,” added David Pratt, framework director, Esh-Stantec. “Their collaborative approach to supporting our clients and delivering industry leading social value outcomes for our people, our client, and their communities would not be possible without their talent and dedication.”

Stantec and Esh-Stantec were also commended in five further categories at the GEM awards, including Stantec’s civil engineer, India Hucthinson, as the runner-up for the Rising Star Award.
