Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering services, has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2023 TechFest Awards for its work supporting clients with digital innovation.
The TechFest Awards recognise and reward the projects, teams, and companies doing the most to harness digital technologies that drive the construction and civil engineering industries forward.
Stantec’s work to produce 3D digital twins of assets through photogrammetry and High Resolution Digital Site Capture has been shortlisted in the Best Use of Technology: Smart Data Collection for Asset Management category. Traditionally, companies gather data around their assets through on-site visits, topographical surveys, and laser scanning. However, this is time-consuming and doesn’t give a full picture. Stantec’s solution uses drones to capture video and images in ultra-high definition, allowing the smallest of signs to be read within a 3D digital model. This helps clients develop more detailed insight into their assets. They can then make effective investment, management, and maintenance decisions. This leads to increased cost savings, reduced carbon emissions, and most importantly a reduction in risk for personnel as they no longer need to be on-site.
The second shortlisting for Stantec is in the Best Use of Technology: Site Productivity category for the V Scout Project. Here, Stantec worked with the Yorkshire Water Innovation Team to support a Smart Networks Pilot Programme that surveys and monitors sewers to reduce incidents of internal sewer flooding. Conventional approaches to manhole surveys require a three-person crew and operators to enter the sewer and measure the height, diameter, and width of the manhole chamber, as well as observe the overall condition of the asset.
In this pilot study by Yorkshire Water, Stantec and IETG, the team made use of an innovative piece of technology from Subterra – the VScoutTM – a tool for rapid inspections of vertical assets such as manholes. Using photogrammetry and other imaging technology, this can build 3D models of some of the most hard-to-reach places without the need for human involvement. The results from the trial have allowed Yorkshire Water to support better safety levels, improve efficiency, and identify structural defects to address.
Commenting on the news, Dave Roberts, Stantec’s global IT director, said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted in these national awards. Tech-enabled solutions are an area of growing importance for our clients and our industry. Stantec’s technology-forward strategy and our Stantec.io portfolio bring together a wealth of knowledge. This represents our ongoing focus and dedication to innovate and collaborate with our clients on a variety of solutions. These shortlistings prove we’re heading in the right direction with our clients.”
The awards ceremony will be held on 23rd November.
