Stantec appointed to interdisciplinary Canal and River Trust Framework

The Company will be helping preserve and protect the UK's waterway infrastructure and surrounding ecosystems

03/28/2024 London, UK TSX, NYSE: STN

The Canal and River Trust has appointed Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, to its Professional Services Framework. The Company can now provide a range of interdisciplinary services to support the renowned charity in protecting and maintaining its historic water infrastructure as well as the surrounding environments.

The Canal and River Trust is responsible for the care and upkeep of a 2,000-mile network of canals and navigable rivers in the face of climate change impacts and increasingly extreme weather. The Trust’s infrastructure, which can be up to 250 years old, includes the canal structures themselves, the surrounding embankments, culverts and reservoirs, as well as the bridges, locks, and towpaths. At the same time, vital ecosystems surrounding the waterways rely on the continual management and maintenance of the network.

Through the framework, Stantec will now be able to help the trust maintain and preserve its assets with an offering that includes civil, geotechnical, bridge, structural, hydrology & hydraulic engineering and design services as well as a comprehensive mix of environmental, economic, heritage, planning, and ecological consultancy.

“The Canal and River Trust plays a pivotal role in enriching our culture, fostering community wellbeing, and preserving our precious natural habitats.” Said Robert Riddington, Stantec’s director of Water Management.

“With our extensive interdisciplinary expertise around blending nature with engineering, we are delighted to support the Trust in transforming canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and ecosystems can thrive.”

John Ward, Head of Project Delivery at the Canal and River Trust added, “Every day we make sure that 2,980 bridges, 1,580 locks and 335 aqueducts are open and ready for use by communities. At the same time, we care for a 2,000-mile long ‘green-blue ribbon’ that connects hundreds of wildlife habitats, helping the public to get closer to nature wherever they live.

“It’s a mammoth task for a Trust of our kind but made easier when we can draw on innovative, sustainable design and engineering specialists. This framework will help us breathe new life into our canals and rivers so they can continue to be cherished by the communities we serve.”

The Canal and River Trust’s Professional Service Framework will run for an initial period of four years with extension options of up to a further four years.
