Stantec’s carbon management journey rewarded with updated PAS 2080 certification

The Company demonstrated its capabilities in whole-life carbon reduction throughout the built environment

04/03/2024 London, UK TSX, NYSE: STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has updated its PAS 2080 certification in line with the 2023 revision published by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

PAS 2080 provides a common framework within the built environment, supporting organisations in reducing whole life carbon emissions produced throughout projects and programmes of work. It considers and promotes collaboration through the whole value chain, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and cost through intelligent planning, design, construction, and operation.

In 2023, PAS 2080 underwent a significant revision to ensure it placed further emphasis on whole-life carbon management across both infrastructure and buildings, recognising they have key commonalities and are part of interconnected systems within the built environment. It also now has a stronger alignment with the UK’s transition to a net zero carbon economy by 2050 and encourages decarbonised solutions that employ more nature-based approaches and improve climate resilience.

Stantec was already PAS 2080 certified in line with the previous version of the standard, but worked with BSI to demonstrate how it collaborates with clients and contractors across the built environment and prioritises an innovation-led, systems-based approach on schemes, to deliver lower whole-life carbon outcomes. Stantec drew on multiple examples of how it is supporting clients in decarbonisation through different stages of the project lifecycle.

The auditors from BSI commended Stantec on its progress in using advanced digital technology capabilities to reduce carbon, as well as its internal processes being rolled out to identify and develop opportunities, monitor and report carbon savings across multiple projects.

Stantec has created its own whole life carbon calculator to assess emissions reduction across projects and regularly works with clients to input into their own carbon management tools, deliver data improvement projects and develop carbon management approaches.

Stantec also worked with the BSI and an industry working group, supporting the development of the 2023 update to PAS 2080. Adrian Johnson, Stantec’s executive technical director for Sustainability, led the technical advisory panel, helping guide the direction of the updated standard.

“We’ve really stepped up and built on our existing carbon management capabilities in the last few years,” said Andrew Bent-Marshall, Stantec’s programme manager for Net Zero Implementation. “As we’re involved with projects and programmes across the built environment, from early strategic involvement to detailed design, we are very well placed to drive change and make a considerable contribution to the net zero transition in the UK and Ireland.”

“Our collaborate across the value chain, use our digital capabilities, integrate nature-based approaches into solutions, to change the status quo, and our emphasis on systems-thinking and creative innovation means we’re leading the decarbonisation charge in the UK and around the world.”
