The Coed Ely solar farm scheme has been named ‘Clean Energy Project of the Year’ at this year’s Green Energy Awards. The Stantec-supported project has transformed a reclaimed colliery in Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales into a 6-megawatt renewable energy hub. The scheme powers a local hospital with low-carbon electricity while feeding energy back into the national grid.
The Green Energy Awards are a national celebration of innovative technologies, pioneering companies, and inspiring individuals in the energy sector who are helping drive the United Kingdom towards a net zero future. The Clean Energy Project award recognises schemes that are up and running, delivering outstanding carbon savings, contributing to a net zero energy system, and supporting a positive transition.
The Coed Ely solar farm, which uses more than 9,000 solar panels, was opened in November 2025 at a ceremony attended by Rebecca Evans MS, cabinet secretary for economy, energy and planning..The development, led by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, is expected to save thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions throughout its life cycle. It was supported in its delivery by Stantec’s interdisciplinary teams, as well as Vital Energi, Rhomco, and The Urbanists.
Stantec’s teams worked on all stages, from feasibility, grid connection, planning application, design and procurement, through to construction, energisation and operation, and maintenance.
“Our renewables teams are particularly proud of supporting this innovative, community-led clean energy scheme, and this award is testament to the successful collaborative approach taken by the local council and the developers,” said Ben Bowler, Stantec’s director for community renewables in the UK. “We’re proud to use our extensive capabilities in renewable energy planning, design, and delivery to bring this site to life with a new purpose.”
Stantec’s renewable energy offering continues to grow, with its teams offering a range of cross-sector technical, engineering, planning, environmental, and advisory services for public- and private-sector clients. Stantec’s capabilities include site appraisals and creating commercial and feasibility studies, as well as offering a broad mix of planning, environmental, community engagement, and grid-connection services.
