Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design, engineering, and environmental consulting, has been appointed to EirGrid’s Planning and Environmental Specialist Framework. Stantec will provide a broad range of services, using its local, national, and global experience to support Ireland in upgrading its energy networks and integrating renewable power sources.
Stantec has been chosen to support three lots on the framework, providing planning, GIS, and environmental services.
The successful bid serves as an important milestone in Stantec’s strategic growth journey in Ireland. The Company continues to expand its reach into the Irish energy, environmental, and infrastructure markets, with interdisciplinary teams working in offices across the country for public and private sector clients.
Helping power Ireland’s future
As Ireland’s national electricity transmission system operator, EirGrid is aiming to lead the transition to a low-carbon future by making the country’s grid ‘renewable ready’. Stantec’s involvement in the framework will support the reinforcement of Ireland’s grid to accommodate offshore wind projects while helping address complex challenges such as unlocking grid constraints, upgrading ageing assets, and protecting the environment.
The placement will see Stantec’s teams in Ireland, including the recently integrated Ryan Hanley business, deliver integrated planning and environmental services, leveraging their local knowledge, skills, and national presence. The GIS work on the framework will be supported by Stantec’s UK-based teams, drawing on advanced digital tools to accelerate project planning and delivery.
The company’s experience in planning, designing, and delivering major infrastructure and renewables projects, as well as its understanding of the complexities of grid connections, local ecology, and the Irish planning system, position it to add significant value for EirGrid across the three lots. The framework is expected to run for five years, with the option to extend annually for a further three.
“This win is exactly in line with our plans for growth and diversification; it demonstrates our enhanced capabilities across multiple sectors and our long-term commitment to support Irish communities,” said Ger Gibney, managing director for Stantec in Ireland.
Adding value through competence
Stantec’s appointment builds on its existing successful relationship with EirGrid, having previously secured a place on the operator’s offshore framework working in owner’s engineering and design assurance roles on several major projects.
“Our teams are incredibly excited to demonstrate our planning and environmental capabilities to help support this country’s complex energy transition,” said Sophie Lee, transmission and distribution lead at Stantec. “Ireland has some unique challenges, and we’re looking forward to showing EirGrid how the combination of skills, passion, and innovation can bring about both operational efficiencies and benefits for communities, the economy, and the environment.”
Stantec’s broader client offering for the energy sector includes interdisciplinary services across engineering, design, advisory services, and stakeholder engagement. The company’s global knowledge in high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, supported by specialist teams around the world, further strengthens its credentials in the energy transition space.
