Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been appointed to provide technical oversight and advisory services for the Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility (TV, ERF), a new 450,000 tonne per annum energy-from-waste plant in Redcar.
The facility will be operated by Viridor, whilst the contract will be managed by Tees Valley Energy Recovery Limited, a special purpose vehicle formed by the seven partner councils. It will offer a safe, reliable and sustainable long-term solution for treating residual waste produced across the North-East, supporting the partner authorities’ goals of sending zero waste to landfill. The facility will process residual waste produced across Darlington, Durham, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton and use it as a fuel to generate energy for the grid. Once complete, the plant will serve up to 1.5 million people and provide enough energy to power more than 60,000 homes.
Stantec’s role spans the full project lifecycle, building on six years of prior engagement that included ground investigation, planning, permitting advice, and procurement support. The interdisciplinary consultancy will act as the authority’s engineer for Tees Valley Energy Recovery, reviewing contractor documentation, monitoring quality standards, and advising on compliance with specifications throughout the four-year construction and commissioning phase.
The facility will be designed to be carbon capture and combined heat and power ready, with space allocated for future carbon-capture infrastructure and ongoing funding applications to support its integration.
Stantec’s appointment reflects its proven track record in delivering similar projects, deep understanding of both public and private sector requirements, and cross-discipline expertise. The team will work closely with interested parties, including the councils, communities, and contractors, to facilitate collaboration and manage technical challenges as the facility progresses towards operational status.
“This project shows what we’re capable of when it comes to our ability to support clients from initial site investigations through to delivery. We’ll be drawing on our detailed engineering knowledge, extensive experience, positive relationship with the client, and collaborative mindset,” said Chris Hudson, technical lead for waste and energy transition for Stantec in the UK. “We are proud to contribute to a facility that will provide sustainable waste management and resilient infrastructure for the region.”
Stantec offers a comprehensive suite of services for public and private sector clients involved in energy and waste generation. This includes project management, engineering oversight, permitting, and stakeholder engagement, supporting the delivery of sustainable infrastructure across the UK.
