Originally built in 1742, Clifton Court was the impressive centrepiece of Chesterfield Hospital. Having occupied the building since 1961, Nuffield Health closed the hospital in 2008 and transferred its operations to a building close by, with the intention to redevelop the hospital to its former glory. They engaged us to help with a sympathetic transformation of a Grade II listed building to deliver modern private healthcare services.
We provided structural, civil, and geotechnical consultancy services on this project with its constricted site access within an urban environment. Refurbishing the historic Grade II listed building required extensive alteration and extension—the entirely new hospital building needed to provide outstanding clinical facilities and customer experience to maintain its reputation. In keeping with the site constrictions in this urban residential area, our design for the four-storey reinforced concrete frame for the new hospital building incorporated a deep basement. The numerous operating theatres had stringent vibration limitations, so we conducted a complex analysis to deliver spaces that adhered to requirements. Using LUSAS, a sophisticated tool that helps analyse infrastructure projects, we measured footfall-induced vibrations on the operating theatres. This resulted in a seven percent reduction in slab thickness and reduced contract costs.
With this new hospital, Nuffield Health can provide healthcare in a re-envisioned environment that’s home to 30 beds, 11 consulting rooms, three digital theatres, and a critical care unit with the very latest technology.
