From route assessments to remedial measures and effects on tourism and recreation

Muirhall Energy Ltd. had 15 wind turbines that they wanted to get to Crossdykes Wind Farm. When in operation, this wind farm would produce up to 48 megawatts of energy. But first they had to get the turbines to the location.

Our contribution involved identifying the preferred route for construction traffic and abnormal loads in consultation with relevant stakeholders. We assessed the routes to identify any remedial measures required (including concerns about the C80a), prepared the traffic and transport section of the environmental statement, and produced an outline construction traffic management plan (OCTMP).

Once the project had started, we secured two follow-up pieces of work for other disciplines. The first assessed the potential socio-economic, tourism, and recreation effects that could occur as a result of the proposed development. The second was to consider the need for a temporary bridge design solution at the Black Esk Bridge, which was identified as a pinch point for abnormal indivisible load (AIL) vehicles.

At a meeting of the Planning Applications Committee in May 2016, councillors gave their unanimous backing to the proposal—the passage of which will clear the way for Crossdykes Wind Farm to produce clean sustainable energy equivalent to powering over 28,400 UK average domestic households.
