Didcot Quarter is a new development on brownfield land, located next to the former Didcot Power Station. Creating two speculative industrial units at this site, this project represents the largest industrial development in South Oxfordshire for over 20 years.
Collaborating closely with the architects, we supported the project through its planning stages and were subsequently contracted to work with Winvic to oversee the design through construction period.
Built on the site of a former Ministry of Defence logistics depot—with a history of sporadic development and variable soil conditions—our team provided a geo-environmental assessment and geotechnical design. Maximising the admission of natural light, our structural engineers also worked on the two warehouse buildings, including offices of high-spec modern design with dramatic glazed facades.
Understanding the need to be sensitive to the surrounding area, our Civil Engineering team planned for comprehensive landscaping across the site and careful treatment of new transport access to mitigate disturbance. To cater to the local area’s technology market, special emphasis was placed on creating an environment that promotes the health and wellbeing of employees working in the two units with five acres (two hectares) of natural landscaping featuring native trees and flowers. The buildings achieved BREEAM Excellent rating.
Our Civil Engineering team also oversaw the installation of a new bus stop and cycle path as part of the surrounding infrastructure, which will encourage the facility’s community to adopt sustainable methods of transport. The buildings also feature carbon saving features including photovoltaic solar panels, air source heat pumps, and rainwater harvesting system.
With the work now complete, this sustainable, hi-tech warehousing development will support the health and wellbeing of its future occupants while helping the local economy to thrive.
