Economic Impact Assessment of Forest-Based Activities in Scotland

Scottish Forestry, the government agency responsible for forestry policy, support, and regulations, wanted to assess the economic contribution of forest-based activities in Scotland. Their aim was to develop an evidence base to help them demonstrate the economic contribution their organisation makes to Scotland’s economy and workforce. They reached out to our team to help.

We developed a bottom-up approach to data building, drawing information from both the Office of National Statistics’ Inter-Departmental Business Register and commercial data service providers, cleansing the data to create more accurate and comprehensive data sets of Forestry businesses in Scotland. Collaborating with Scottish Forestry and wider sector specialists, we then analysed gross value added (GVA) and employment supported by Scottish Forestry, broken down by sub-sector.

Due for publication in late 2024, the final report will provide valuable insights into the economic contribution of the forestry sector and its supply chains to Scotland’s economy and labour market.
