Emergency Transmission Line Re-route - Oroville Dam

We were awarded an emergency support contract to design a temporary reroute of the key transmission lines

Finding a permanent solution in half the time

When key transmission lines to the Oroville generation station failed, the dam was facing an emergency. With towers close to the zone of failure, three 240 kV transmission circuits that traversed over the spillway urgently needed to be replaced. We stepped in to help.

Our transmission line experts were awarded an emergency support contract to design a temporary reroute of the key transmission lines. We came up with temporary and permanent solutions to relocate the lines away from the spillway and potential collapse, and, within three months, our teams had come up with a temporary wood solution to have the lines installed and relocated away from the spillway. Then, we worked on a permanent solution to relocate the new transmission lines a large distance away from the spillway.

To date, our team has provided strategic support, including dam safety, hydraulic analysis and modeling, geotechnical surveying, transmission design and construction and cost estimating support. In the end, we were able to engineer, procure and support the construction of two different three circuit 240kV transmission lines in less than seven months—half the time a project like this traditionally takes.
