Gloucester College selected a brownfield site for their development of a new £15 million ($19 million) flagship college campus in the former mining area of the Royal Forest of Dean, the first phase of a £100 million ($129 million) regeneration masterplan for the area. We worked with architect Roberts Limbrick and contractor Barnwood Construction, providing civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering consultancy for this project.
The site of the new campus buildings is a former coal quarry that was backfilled. Our role included consultation with the Environment Agency and Environmental Health to appropriately deal with ground risks.
Our structural design supported Roberts Limbrick’s vision and included elements such as curved, glazed elevations, and a whale back feature to enclose the rooftop plant. We achieved column free zones with the inclusion of hanging structures and trusses to create a spacious and light atmosphere. Additionally, we carefully designed structural elements to hide building services from sight while still providing easy access for maintenance.
The building is orientated to provide high levels of natural light. To reduce its impact on the landscape, it incorporates brown and green roofs to provide habitats for wildlife along with grey water and rainwater harvesting. The campus includes a large surface car park that required our engineers to design attenuation within the sub-base as part of a sustainable drainage scheme.
The new campus merges post-16 educational facilities in the area to provide a highly sustainable college. Features include an independent sixth form a new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) centre, jointly run by Gloucestershire College and Dene Magna School, and a new training restaurant, alongside open community spaces.
