Identifying transport and socioeconomic problems in south-east Cardiff
The southeast Cardiff area suffers from a range of transport and connectivity problems. To help address these issues, we were appointed by Welsh Government and Cardiff Council to investigate the case for change for investment in transport from the perspective of both strategic connections to the east, and local connectivity for residents and businesses in southeast Cardiff.
The study combined socio-economic and transport supply and demand analysis in the area, including a review of public transport connectivity in the area, relative to other parts of Cardiff, including access to employment opportunities and labour market catchments—the purpose was to identify the transport and socio-economic problems in the area. A logic mapping approach set out the range of transport and socio-economic benefits of investing in transport in the area. In addition, we developed an innovative spreadsheet model, based on aggregations of the southeast Wales transport model to develop estimates of the scale of benefits which could be realised from a range of transport investment scenarios, represented by assumed travel time savings between sectors.
The report was used as an evidence base for a full study using the Welsh Transport Appraisal Guidance (WelTAG) to progress a range of options towards eventual implementation, bringing benefits to the southeast Cardiff area.
