To help address waiting lists at King’s College Hospital in London, the National Health Service Foundation Trust looked to free up space within the main hospital and partnered with Premier Modular to create a modern hub for outpatients. Looking to develop a unique range of spaces with minimal disturbance during construction, Premier Modular engaged our team to serve as their structural designer.
We delivered structural designs for a modular hospital expansion—designing the new hub in modular units. As well as being quicker than in-situ construction, modular construction is also cleaner, quieter, safer, and reduces disruption. Aligning with the UK government’s directive for the greater use of offsite manufacture for healthcare projects, the units were constructed 338 kilometres away in East Yorkshire, at Premier Modular’s factory site, and transported to the site on Denmark Hill before final assembly.
With a need for a range of unique spaces and the importance of reduced disturbance during construction, healthcare is one of the most complex sectors to design. As structural designers, our main challenge was to limit, as much as possible, the dynamic response of the floor panels within the building. This supports occupant comfort and, by decreasing any floor vibrations, supports the continued function of critical hospital equipment. To create stability, we defined the thickness of the boards on the floor to provide sufficient modal mass as well as the size and arrangement of the floor joists. Our analysis also helped determine where columns should ultimately be placed to offer needed support. Fully assembled, this four-storey building is made up of 133 steel-framed modules. The building is designed to limit the impact on the environment over its life, targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. It also exemplifies the steps the NHS will need to take to reach its target of net zero carbon by 2045.
With these modular structures in place, King’s College Hospital extension will have 48 consulting rooms and eight procedure rooms. When fully operational, this expanded hospital will house various outpatient services that include dermatology, rheumatology, neurosciences, as well as other aspects of surgery and therapy.
