New customers and renewable energy generators applied to National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) for connections to the electricity grid in South Wales. But with existing substations in Swansea and Pembroke lacking space for expansion, they needed to develop a new site.
NGET selected us to provide design and option selection support for a proposed substation near Llandyfaelog in Carmarthenshire to meet the increased demand. We further supported NGET with the planning application for the development, ground investigations, ecology, and archaeological surveys across the site.
Our 400-kilovolt solution considers whole life cost and safety, and the plan for the substation is designed to be deliverable with net benefit biodiversity. Early on we identified and proposed mitigating actions for risks that could impact the project programme, including system outages, and cost and site hazards, and created a sustainability action plan.
With these options in hand, NGET can continue to explore ways to meet growing demand for power in South Wales. They have appointed us to the next stage of front-end engineering design works, helping them fulfil their legal obligation to connect customers and support net zero targets.
